Paul Hastings Adds Premier Transactional Tax Lawyer in Washington, D.C.

Further enhancing its leading global tax practice and global corporate platform more broadly, Paul Hastings LLP announced today that Daniel Nicholas has joined the firm as a partner in Washington, D.C. Nicholas joins from Weil Gotshal & Manges LLP and follows structured finance partners Shawn Kodes and Matt Nemeth, who previously joined from that firm.

Nicholas has nearly two decades of experience in global finance, capital markets, and derivatives transactions, including debt instruments and modifications, restructurings, interest deductibility, and tax fungibility and withholding. His transactional experience includes asset-based financings, such as securitizations and receivable-based borrowing, as well as derivatives like convertible debt and prepaid forward contracts. He also concentrates on international tax planning, transactions, and financial products taxation.

“The depth, breadth, and caliber of our tax resources are a critical value add and differentiator to our transactional clients across industries, and Daniel’s addition elevates our capabilities and helps us meet increased demand across our corporate practices,” said firm Chair Frank Lopez. “His focus on U.S tax considerations with respect to structured credit, finance, capital markets and derivatives transactions, and financial restructuring is highly synergistic with our existing platform and will enable us to gain further market share.”

An accomplished tax lawyer who is ranked in the International Tax Review’s World Tax 2024 guide and was named a “Next Generation” lawyer by The Legal 500, Nicholas has regularly advised sophisticated global financial leaders such as Blackstone, Apollo, Amherst, and Morgan Stanley on their most complex transactions.

“I’m excited to rejoin my former Weil colleagues, Shawn Kodes and Matt Nemeth.” said Nicholas. “I was impressed by what they had to say about the firm and look forward to continuing my work with them and with the other transactional lawyers across the firm’s elite global platform.”

Nicholas is the second partner to join the firm’s well-recognized tax practice this month, following Alex Farr, who joined in Dallas. Ranked by Chambers and International Tax Review (ITR), Paul Hastings received the “Impact Deal of the Year” award at ITR’s 18th annual Americas Tax Awards 2023 and includes lawyers recognized internationally for their work in critical and evolving areas of tax law.

The firm’s tax lawyers guide clients through the tax and structuring issues that arise across the full array of sophisticated transactions, including private-equity-backed acquisitions and dispositions, M&A transactions, investment funds, and asset management, all areas of finance, including structured and leveraged finance and alternative lending, capital markets and real estate and real estate funds transactions, as well as all aspects of restructurings.
