Paul Hastings Continues Growth, Adding Top FCPA White Collar Litigators in Washington D.C.

Paul Hastings LLP, a leading global law firm, announced today that Matt Herrington and Tom Best, two leading Anti-corruption and FCPA practitioners, have joined the firm as partners in the Investigations and White Collar Defense practice, and will be based in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office. They join from Steptoe & Johnson LLP, where they were partners.

“After a strong performance in 2018, we are adding to an area of strength in our top-tier Investigations and White Collar Defense practice,” said Seth Zachary, chair of Paul Hastings. “The addition of top white collar lawyers like Matt and Tom is a demonstration of the premier lawyers we are attracting.”

“Paul Hastings’ White Collar FCPA practice is one of the best in the world, and with strength in Washington, D.C., New York, London, Latin America, and Asia, we are well positioned to take advantage of growing our relationships with existing clients, as well as generating new opportunities for clients facing multijurisdictional investigations,” said Herrington.

“There’s no question that Paul Hastings’ robust global platform is the perfect setting to take our practice to the next level,” added Best.

Herrington is a seasoned white collar litigator with more than 25 year of experience in complex cross-border investigations, working with clients in some of the world’s largest and most respected banking, defense, extractive, pharmaceutical, and professional service firms. He has tried cases in state and federal court, and has represented clients before the Department of Justice, U.S. and foreign financial regulators, both houses of Congress, various Inspector Generals, and the Special Counsel’s Office.

Best has been handling some of the most complex FCPA/anti-corruption, economic sanctions and international regulatory investigations, enforcement and compliance matters before the US DOJ, SEC and other countries’ regulators for the past fifteen years. He acts for major multinationals in Western Europe, Asia, and North and South America, and has particular experience in the financial services, extractive, manufacturing and oil and oilfield services sectors. In addition to his investigations, enforcement and compliance practice, he often guides clients in managing FCPA/anti-corruption, economic sanctions, and other cross-border risks in complex M&A transactions.

Herrington and Best join Paul Hastings in the midst of a lateral hiring spree, which has included the 2019 additions of prominent derivatives lawyer Joyce Xu in New York; Private Equity partner Alex Kaufman and M&A partners Bill Choe and Jason Rabbit-Tomita in Palo Alto; and M&A partner Steven Bryan in London. The 2019 lateral hires follow a year when the Firm added Ira Kustin, Private Funds partner in New York; Kfir Abutbul, Private Equity partner in Houston; and several partner additions in London, including Regulatory and Fintech partner Arun Srivastava, M&A partner Roger Barron, Private Equity partner Anu Balasubramanian, and Privacy and Cybersecurity partner Sarah Pearce.

Paul Hastings’ Investigations and White Collar Defense practice features a deep bench of seasoned professionals, including senior defense lawyers as well as former enforcement attorneys from both the DOJ and SEC, and has played key roles in virtually every path breaking FCPA settlement over the last decade. Consistently ranked in the top 25 of Global Investigations Review’s (GIR) ranking of the world’s leading cross-border investigations practices, the Firm has been named GIR’s “Most Impressive Investigations Practice.” The practice and its lawyers have also been recognized by The Financial Times, The American Lawyer, Chambers & Partners and The Legal 500, among others.
