Womble Bond Dickinson announced today that David L. Attanasio has joined the firm’s Business Litigation Practice as a partner in Washington, DC. Attanasio focuses on international arbitration and cross-border litigation, with extensive experience representing clients in the energy and natural resources sector and disputes relating to Latin America. His international arbitration advocacy has been recognized in leading legal directories, including Chambers USA, Who’s Who Legal, and Legal 500 US. Attanasio arrives at the firm from Dechert.
Attanasio follows the recent addition of Alexandre de Gramont, who joined Womble last month and leads the firm’s International Disputes Practice. The two practiced together at Dechert for nearly a decade. “David is a brilliant lawyer with deep experience in international commercial arbitration, investor-state arbitration, and public international law,” said de Gramont. “He is a critical component of our strategic plan to make Womble a go-to destination for international dispute resolution services.”

As part of Womble’s strategic growth plan, Attanasio expands Womble’s capacity to deliver effective advocacy backed by the firm’s industry acumen. “With its extensive experience in key industries that use international arbitration services, Womble provides an ideal platform to grow my practice,” said Attanasio. “By drawing on the firm’s understanding of our clients’ businesses, we can offer uniquely compelling advocacy in international disputes and an excellent value proposition. Few practices will be able to match this capability.”

In addition to his core arbitration practice, Attanasio represents clients in cross-border litigation – including before the New York federal courts – and advises them on public international law issues and dispute resolution mechanisms, including business and human rights, diplomatic law, international organizational law, and human rights law. He serves on the Board of Directors of the International Law Association (American Branch) and co-chairs its Investment Law Committee. He has also been a member of the global International Law Association’s Rule of Law and International Investment Law Committee.
Attanasio earned a J.D. from Harvard Law School, a Ph.D. in political philosophy from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a B.S. in physics and philosophy from Tufts University. A frequent writer and speaker, Attanasio co-authored International Investment Protection of Global Banking and Finance (Wolters Kluwer, 2021), an award-winning treatise on investor-state arbitration, and is the sole author of the Spanish-language monograph State Responsibility Based on the Actions of Private Actors (Universidad de los Andes/Editorial Temis, 2016). He has also taught courses on international arbitration at Georgetown University Law Center as an adjunct professor.
This addition reflects continued momentum for the Business Litigation Group, which has welcomed more than 30 attorneys in the last year. Notable additions include partners Derek Edwards (Nashville), Alexandre “Alex” de Gramont (DC), Ana Maria Gutiérrez (Denver), Scott Hyman (Irvine), Kristina Moore (DC), Janna Satz Nugent (Atlanta), Steve Snyder (DC), Genevieve Walser-Jolly (Irvine), and of counsel Erin Taylor (Charlotte).
